Obsessive Compulsive Shopping and Over-Spending

Stop it right now with help from Hypnotherapy and NLP

Shopping and spending: two words that describe the same thing. Spending makes our world go round, it can be fun doing it, and we can buy things we need or want. But addictively spending money you can’t afford is different: it has consequences. Probably you know all about the consequences and that’s why you’re looking for a way to break out of this addictive behaviour.

What causes my addiction to shopping?

If you are feeling down (anxious or angry or bored or some other bad feeling) then thinking about buying something new gets you away from the unpleasant thoughts, and then you start buying - and if shopping also gets you a good feeling then that’s another reason to shop.

Or perhaps you are feeling good and want it to last. If the idea of shopping makes you feel good then going shopping seems like a sensible thing to do, and off you go.

How did the habit start?

One or both those reasons are usually involved. What is also involved is the vital ingredient for an addiction: habit. Obsessive compulsive shopping and overspending are habituated behaviours. Habit explains it all. Habits are automated, unconscious patterns of thoughts that can be picked up accidentally and all unwittingly. These patterns can reliably link feeling good to the idea of spending: these patterns can link feeling good to going broke.

When we say broke we are talking money, not people. You’re fine, it’s just that a habit you picked up accidentally, and unwittingly made it into a pattern that rules your mind, is controlling your behaviours. So it’s let’s go shopping and never mind the consequences.

What do you do to stop obsessive compulsive shopping and overspending?

Since you’re not broke, you don’t need fixing: so you don’t need ‘Therapy’. Our strategy for dealing with compulsive shopping is best described as training and re-conditioning your mind. We can help you stop this habit by teaching you techniques from NLP that allow you bring your thought patterns into consciousness and substitute a pattern you would rather have.  We also make extensive use of hypnotherapy to help at a deep unconscious level, employing suggestion, metaphor and story.

These two disciplines can help you to get back in charge of your imagination, instead of the other way round. Instead of being the star of endless shopping movies, or listening to the lovely stories you tell yourself about spending, or feeling a high at the thought of exercising that credit card: you learn how to become the director of the movie of your real life, the teller of tales that are solidly based in reality, with feelings that are based on what is actually happening. And the changes can be brought about surprisingly quickly.

The speed of change

The rapidity of change is due to:

We save an enormous amount of time by refusing to get lost in the past or in pointless searches for first causes.

How long will it take to stop these problems?

On average people need two or three one-hour sessions, though some people need less than this. We always aim at achieving substantial differences during the first session.

Dealing with the other problems

But what about those bad feelings that shopping helped to conceal? We can help there too. We will not be surprised to find some of those are habits as well. And the feelings that aren’t habits? Hypnotherapy and NLP can provide help in taking a fresh look at anxiety or depression, and can also help with all the problems our active imaginations can dream up for us. Our work is based on where you are now and, most importantly, where you want to be and what you want to do. Whatever is stopping you is the place we start from: you choose the destination.
